Plug plant sizes.

Modified on Wed, 29 Jan at 4:18 PM

When buying plug plants, its important to understand plug sizes and what to do with them.  The vast majority of plugs will be annual plants to create seasonal displays in flower beds, borders, hanging baskets and pots. These can loosely be split into "summer" or "winter" categories, but in truth, many may flower for six months or longer. To help you understand the different types of plug plants here are the descriptions below:

Pro Plugs

These come in two sizes, Pro plugs, and Proplugs which are slightly larger. These are both very small, but really great value if you're happy to grow these on for a while before planting out.  Prick them out into larger shuttle trays or pots and grow on for between 5 and 8 weeks in a greenhouse or windowsill.

Plugs and Jumbo Plugs

These are larger plugs that have been grown on  a little more for you. They still need to be planted into larger containers and kept indoors or in a greenhouse prior to planting out, and will need around 4 - 6 weeks before they will be large enough to plant out safely.

Garden Ready plants

These are exactly as described, and don't need to be grown on before planting into hanging baskets, planters or the garden, provided no frosty nights are predicted in your area.
