For a more ‘of the moment’ choice or simply for convenience, Garden Ready Plugs need no growing on whatsoever. They can be planted direct into baskets, containers, beds and borders and will not take as a long to flower or fruit, making them super easy to grow. And you can make it even easier by reading our full guide below!
Explanation on Plug Sizes
When talking about garden ready bedding plants, it is important to understand plug sizes. View our helpful guide below:

As you can see Garden Ready Plugs Plants are the largest kind and they offer the easiest solution as you don’t have to grow them on before you plant them. As the name implies, they are ready to be planted in the garden straight away. This reduces the amount of time and effort it takes for you to get wonderful blooming displays!
On Receipt
For most Jumbo/Garden Ready collections, the “mini greenhouse” they are packed in will have a label on the outside, listing the individual varieties inside. We recommend writing your own labels out on receipt!
Unpack plugs immediately and carefully and stand them in water for an hour prior to planting. They may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post but they’ll completely recover within a few days.
If you can’t plant straight away, plug plants can sit for up to a week if kept upright and moist (not too wet) in a light, airy spot – a windowsill or in a greenhouse is best.
Planting Garden Ready Bedding Plants
If planting directly into flower beds (which we recommend doing with this sized plug plant), prepare the ground well, removing weeds and digging in some compost or well-rotted manure if your soil is not already rich. For beds, borders and containers, plant your plugs approx. 20 cm (8″) apart to allow them room to grow. We recommend using our Easy Fill Hanging Baskets for the very best hanging basket displays. Plant one grown on plant through each planting hole, using good quality compost and our excellent SwellGel & Feed. A full video planting guide is available on our website. Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming fast Superior soluble food, to encourage flowering. Deadhead when flowers fade to encourage more flowers.
Garden Ready Bedding Plants – Aftercare
When it comes to aftercare, it really depends on what variety of Garden Ready Bedding Plants you buy. We suggest visiting the product page on the website for full details on aftercare. Or similarly, if bought from a garden centre then ask a member of staff. If still out of luck, a visit to the RHS website is worth a shot as they have advice on almost all varieties you can buy.
