There’s nothing better than a bed full of the colourful blooms of Primroses, Pansies and other autumn bedding plants. The great thing about these varieties is that there’s something for all year round – from Spring and Summer to Autumn and Winter, a hardy selection of these plants will give you year-long colour.
Primroses and Autumn Bedding
Planting from Autumn right through to the Spring, the possibilities are endless with these classics. Generally growing to about 30cm in height, they are perfect to fill in gaps in beds and borders but also thrive in pots and planters, especially in hanging baskets. Fill up easy fill baskets with these hardy plug plants and you’ll get an astonishing display of colour.
Planting Advice for Primroses, Pansies and Autumn Bedding
- Plant straight into baskets or pots and grow on for a week or two before planting up.
- Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
- Plant approx. 20cm (8in) apart to allow them room to grow.
- Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser for Flowers & Fruits, to encourage flowering.
- Dead head when flowers fade to encourage more flowers.
Aftercare advice for Primrose, Pansies and Autumn Bedding
- Regular maintenance and watering are essential to grow fabulous basket and container displays that last the whole season.
- Check soil dryness and water the plants well every day in summer (unless the compost is wet).
- Aim to keep the compost moist but not soggy and avoid wetting the foliage and flowers.
- From March to June, apply a general-purpose liquid fertiliser once a week.

- Deadhead and trim your plants regularly to maintain shape and encourage new flowers.
- Do not allow plants to set seed.
